Treatment services
Various specialized cancer treatment-related services are available at BC Cancer – Kelowna.

Contact details are on the first Kelowna page, "Centre overview" tab.

Biological therapy and immune therapies

These are both systemic therapies. Some newer treatments use special agents which are not like other drugs. Your cancer specialist and the pharmacist will explain such treatments and answer any questions you may have.

Clinical trials

Clinical trials look at new and more effective chemotherapy treatments. During your visits to BC Cancer – Kelowna, you may be asked to take part in one of these research studies. This request can raise many questions, so before you make your decision, feel free to discuss your concerns with any member of your health care team; your cancer specialist can advise if you are a suitable candidate.

Dental care

Dental services are available by referral from your cancer specialist. The dentist will take needed x-rays, and see if there are any concerns to be addressed prior to radiation or chemotherapy. They will also advise you in mouth care during and following your treatment. Please note, dental services are not to provide routine or needed dental care unrelated to direct care for cancer treatment.

Diagnostic imaging

The diagnostic imaging department, located in Kelowna General Hospital at the end of our adjoining corridor, provides x-rays, CT Scans, MRIs and other similar tests.

The PET Functional Imaging page has information about Kelowna PET/CT.

In-hospital care

At some point during treatment, you may need to stay at Kelowna General Hospital. In these cases, you will be admitted to a special unit for cancer patients located on the fourth floor. Your cancer specialist will remain involved with your care while you are in hospital. To reach the 4th floor hospital unit where care will be provided (4A or 4B), take the elevators located in the main lobby.

KGH procedures

Certain procedures, such as blood transfusions, are carried out in the Kelowna General Hospital Ambulatory Care Unit. Walk through our adjoining corridor, turn left once you pass Diagnostic Imaging and the area is at the end of the hall. Please note, all patients must register at the Kelowna General Hospital admitting desk prior to proceeding to the Ambulatory Care Unit.

Laboratory

For patients receiving treatment at BC Cancer Kelowna, a lab is on-site. Use is by appointment only. Speak to a booking clerk to book a time.

Some lab tests are provided by Valley Medical Laboratories in the community, which is often the case for patients involved in research. Other tests may be provided at Kelowna General Hospital.

Palliative care / pain & symptom management

Palliative care is specialized medical care for people with serious illnesses. At BC Cancer – Kelowna, palliative care is focused on providing patients with relief from symptoms, pain and stress, whatever the cancer diagnosis. The goal is to improve quality of life for both the patient and the family.

Radiation therapy

Radiation therapy uses beams of high-energy x-rays to destroy cancer cells. It is required by almost half of all cancer patients at some point in their treatment.

Surgery

Surgery alone sometimes cures cancer. Sometimes it is used in conjunction with other treatments such as chemotherapy (cancer drugs) or radiation therapy. Cancer surgery is generally provided in regional health authorities, not at BC Cancer locations.

Systemic therapy

Systemic therapy includes chemotherapy and many different or new drugs to treat cancer. Systemic therapy travels through your blood to cells all over your body, to your whole "system".  Chemotherapy and hormone therapy use special drugs to destroy cancer cells. You may take these drugs by mouth, or may have them injected through a vein in your arm.
