Molecular Imaging and Therapy

Positron emission tomography (PET) is a medical imaging technique that produces three-dimensional images of functional processes in the body.

BC Cancer operates a provincial Functional Imaging program with two PET/CT scanners at its Vancouver location, another PET/CT scanner at its Victoria location, and an additional PET/CT scanner having been added at its Kelowna location in August 2020. The provincial program began operations in June 2005 and as of January 2020 had performed over 85,000 procedures.

PET Functional Imaging at BC Cancer

In September 2010, BC Cancer opened a PET Cyclotron/Radiopharmacy at its Vancouver location. This PET Cyclotron/Radiopharmacy, licensed by Health Canada and the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission, has enabled the program to manufacture and distribute clinical PET radiopharmaceuticals, such at Fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG), on a provincial scale while also enabling research into new compounds.

PET/CT scanning is available within the provincial Functional Imaging program for both adult and pediatric patients who fall within BC Cancer's specific approved indications and guidelines.

The provincial Functional Imaging program is being developed to:

  • Improve cancer diagnosis and treatment planning for patients and health care professionals
  • Build research programs for the discovery, development and application of new radiotracers
  • Apply new advances in imaging to improve prevention, early diagnosis and management of cancers
  • Collaborate in a growing national and international network of functional imaging programs
Mission

BC Cancer PET scan provides professional, compassionate care for patients.

Vision

Delivery of world-class innovative molecular imaging technologies and treatment strategies through research and collaboration.
