The BC Cancer Excellence Awards provide an opportunity to shine a light on the inspiring people and teams who help ensure that British Columbians receive world-class, patient-centred cancer screening, treatment and support, and benefit from new discoveries that are helping change the face of cancer.
The BC Cancer – Abbotsford Pharmacy team has received a 2022 Excellence award in the category of Teamwork and Collaboration in Action, for working together to solve problems and make a difference for their patients. The team is led by Jennifer Suess, pharmacy professional practice leader.
In 2021, the Abbotsford Pharmacy team faced significant challenges that they worked together to solve. From being displaced from their regular workspace – continuing operations in three separate temporary spaces – to being affected by extreme weather events, this team worked collaboratively to ensure patient care was delivered seamlessly.
The Abbotsford Pharmacy team has been commended on their flexibility when working in temporary locations with limited space, collaborating with positive attitudes to adapt creative solutions, workflows and processes for the new spaces.
During the extreme weather events in November 2021, the patient population at BC Cancer Abbotsford was heavily impacted. The pharmacy team worked together to help identify which patients were impacted by the floods and then helped to facilitate deliveries via helicopter. Team members also volunteered to work additional days to ensure systemic treatment was delivered to patients who missed their appointments due to road closures.
One individual shared, "this team truly epitomizes what it means to work in health care, how to work together to solve big problems, how to support each other through difficult times and how to make a difference for the patients we serve."
