The BC Cancer Excellence Awards provide an opportunity to shine a light on the inspiring people and teams who help ensure that British Columbians receive world-class, patient-centered cancer screening, treatment and support, and benefit from new discoveries that are helping change the face of cancer.

The Advance Care Planning (ACP) Nursing Working Group has received a BC Cancer Excellence Award in the category of Teamwork and Collaboration in Action. This team includes individuals from across the province, led by Heather Kilgour, clinical nurse specialist at BC Cancer – Vancouver.

The ACP Nursing Working Group, co-led by Nursing and Allied Health Research & Knowledge Translation and Professional Practice Nursing, is transforming ACP practices across BC Cancer.

This diverse team includes nursing leaders, direct-care nurses, patient and family partners, and BC Centre for Palliative Care representatives dedicated to empowering nurses with the resources needed to effectively discuss ACP with patients and their families.

Using a co-creation model, the team engaged over 200 nurses to create educational materials, including scripts for introducing ACP and patient-facing resources.

One supporter noted:

“This experience highlighted the power of collective efforts and demonstrated the unwavering dedication of our staff to patient well-being."

With new practices launching in the new year, the team anticipates a positive impact on patient care.
