The BC Cancer Excellence Awards provide an opportunity to shine a light on the inspiring people and teams who help ensure that British Columbians receive world-class, patient-centered cancer screening, treatment and support, and benefit from new discoveries that are helping change the face of cancer.
Pat Britton has been a volunteer at BC Cancer – Kelowna for more than 26 years. She is the winner of this year's BC Cancer Excellence Award in the category of Unsung Hero, direct patient care.
An Unsung Hero is someone who is always ready to help out, and who demonstrates an ongoing pattern of going above and beyond the scope of their job. This person makes a positive impact on those around them and the organization.
Pat is a cherished and dedicated volunteer in Kelowna, where she has supported patients since the day the centre opened in 1998. Known for her warmth, compassion and unwavering commitment, Pat creates a comforting environment for patients and their families, helping to ease the challenges of their cancer journey.
Pat's empathy and genuine interest in others allow her to connect deeply with patients. Her dedication is evident in her remarkable acts of kindness—such as the time she shaved her head to show solidarity with a patient losing their hair, bringing light and support to a difficult moment. As one colleague shared,
"Her warm, funny, and empathetic personality creates a comforting environment for patients and their families during what can be an incredibly challenging time."
Beloved by staff and patients alike, Pat is admired for her reliability, positive attitude, and the invaluable mentorship she provides to new volunteers. Her vibrant sense of humour and readiness to support anyone in need make her an irreplaceable part of the BC Cancer community.
