You can take two steps to prevent cervical cancer:
- Get screened every three to five years;
- Get the HPV vaccine.
All preteens/teens and some adults
should get the HPV vaccine. The vaccine is provided free to students in Grade 6 in BC. It is very effective at protecting against HPV types that cause most cervical cancers.
If you have received the vaccine, you should still get screened, as the vaccine does not protect against all types of HPV that cause cervical cancer.
