The BC Cancer Excellence Awards provide an opportunity to shine a light on the inspiring people and teams who help ensure that British Columbians receive world-class, patient-centred cancer screening, treatment and support, and benefit from new discoveries that are helping change the face of cancer.
Dr. Renelle Myers is an interventional respirologist and principle investigator, integrative oncology at BC Cancer – Vancouver. She is the winner of this year's BC Cancer Excellence Award in the category of Patient Care Champion, nominated by staff.
A Patient Care Champion is a staff member or physician who helps improve patients' experience, quality of life, quality of care and/or knowledge of the cancer system – either directly or indirectly. They show compassion, ingenuity and leadership, an act as a role model for others.
Dr. Renelle Myers is admired by staff and patients alike for the quality of care she delivers. Her colleagues describe how personable she is with her patients, always taking the time to get to know them, explain procedures, comfort them, and ensure they are well taken care of.
One colleague shared, "Dr. Myers works tirelessly to tend to the well-being of her patients and ensure that they are well cared for with ease and poise. I have personally witnessed Dr. Myers comfort uneasy patients prior to their procedure, taking a few extra moments to explain a procedure to them, never taking for granted their fears or rushing them along. She is one of the most kind, ambitious, giving and nurturing individuals I have ever had the pleasure of meeting. The immensity of her kind-heartedness is reflected in the way she treats her patients."
One patient story recalls, "Dr. Myers cares about her patients. She sees people at the most vulnerable points in their lives, and imparts that she truly cares about what happens to them and that she is there to journey with them."
Beyond her role as a clinician, Dr. Myers runs the Leung Breathomics Research Lab at BC Cancer and is the medical lead for the BC Cancer smoking cessation program. Dr. Myers inspires those around her with her dedication to her clinical and research fields, and her work ethic to ensure all of her patients are treated with the utmost respect and compassion.
