The BC Cancer Excellence Awards provide an opportunity to shine a light on our inspiring people and teams who work every day to ensure that British Columbians receive world-class, patient-centred cancer screening, treatment and support, and benefit from new discoveries that are helping change the face of cancer.

Kelly Gill is a radiation therapist at BC Cancer – Surrey. She is the winner of this year's BC Cancer Excellence Award in the category of Patient Care Champion, nominated by staff.

A Patient Care Champion is a staff member or physician who helps improve patients' experience, quality of life, quality of care and/or knowledge of the cancer system – either directly or indirectly. They show compassion, ingenuity and leadership, and act as a role model for others.

Kelly Gill is the recipient of this year's BC Cancer Excellence Award in the category of Patient Care Champion, nominated by staff.

Patients and staff admire Kelly's kindness, empathy and compassion. Kelly always comes to work with a smile on her face and patients look forward to seeing her. She treats all patients as if they were a friend or family member.

A patient shared, "Kelly has an amazing attitude. She is cheerful, friendly, and positive. She always took the time to chat with me and encouraged me to stay positive. That simple act made the daily treatments tolerable and I am grateful for Kelly and her compassion."

In addition to caring for patients, Kelly is described as a leader who generously devotes her time to mentoring students and new staff at BC Cancer – Surrey. She is well respected by everyone at the centre.

One of Kelly's colleagues shared, "The amount of time that Kelly puts into listening to each individual makes them feel like they are the only one that matters. She makes a point to build a rapport with them to the point where they enjoy coming in to see her! She is a strong advocate for her patients. Kelly is a leader. She mentors the new students and staff, always encouraging them to be the best therapist."
