Ruby Gidda is executive director for BC Cancer – Abbotsford and Provincial Practice, Nursing & Allied Health. She is the winner of this year's BC Cancer Excellence Award in the category of Unsung Hero, patient support.

An Unsung Hero is someone who is always ready to help out, and who demonstrates an ongoing pattern of going above and beyond the scope of their job. This person makes a positive impact on those around them and the organization.

Ruby is regarded by her colleagues as a compassionate and dedicated leader. Known for her unwavering commitment to patient care, Ruby's positivity and innovative problem-solving skills have inspired her team to reach new heights of excellence.

Colleagues commend Ruby for her approachable demeanour and her consistent support for both patients and fellow staff members. Staff say that she "walks the walk," and is frequently seen chatting with patients on the elevators or the units.

Ruby's strong leadership and commitment to supporting patients and families was exemplified during the Atmospheric River Floods where Ruby and her teams went above and beyond to ensure patients, families and staff were all taken care of. Her nurturing mentorship style has earned her the trust of her team, as she continues to foster a supportive and empowering environment for professional growth.

Ruby's dedication to enhancing patient experiences and fostering a collaborative work environment exemplifies the true spirit of an Unsung Hero.
